My kids are loud in the car. They talk, they argue and they sing every time we get in the van. I really thought getting a vehicle with a DVD player would make for quieter trips…ha ha ha. In order to escape the constant back and forth of the kids I usually listen to my audio book on the front speakers and tune them out. Don’t worry, if someone starts screaming bloody murder I’ll turn down the book and see what’s going on.
A few days ago while they were watching Zootopia (read the movie was on while they were acting like wild animals) something they said caught my attention so I turned down my book and listened. Somehow the kids got on the topic of what they want to be when they grow up. The conversation went something like this.
Silas: “Hey November, do you want to be a police officer when you get bigger?”
November: “No, I gonna be a mermaid.”
Me: surprised she didn’t say princess
Silas: “Well, I’m gonna be Slappy.” Yes, he’s talking about the evil dummy from Goosebumps.
Me: sounds legit
Merrick: “Well, I’m going to be a vampire.”
Me: thinking to myself, “Me too, son, me too.”
Merrick: “Mama, do you want to be a vampire?”
Me: thinking he must have read my mind…”Hell, yes. I’ve always wanted to be a vampire.” I blame this on all the romantic supernatural books I read.
Merrick: “Yeah, then we could live forever.”
Me to my husband: “I think we’re raising a freak show.”
Merrick: “You said we can be anything we want, didn’t you?”
I can see it now, “Attention please, quite down and prepare yourself to witness the unimaginable! The Jacobs Family Freak Show will amaze and astound you! In the tent to my right you will see the beautiful mergirl November dance through the water. In the tent to my left you can witness the thing nightmares are made of…Silas, an evil walking, talking dummy! And behind us, in the big top, come and see the main attraction, but hold on to your neck because this blood-sucking pair is hungry!”
I’m not sure where my husband fits into this. I guess he can be the ring-master. He doesn’t seem to have aspirations of morphing into some mythical creature which is kind of a bummer.
On a serious note, Merrick actually wants to make anime when he ‘grows up’. I think being a vampire would just be the icing on the cake for him. I’m also thrilled that the kids have such crazy imaginations after all, who am I to dash their little dreams.
